A pocos días de que inicie su gestión en el Ayuntamiento de Mérida, el alcalde electo de Mérida, Mauricio Vila Dosal, acudió, junto con su esposa María Eugenia Ortiz Abraham, y sus hijos Mauricio y Alejandrina, a visitar al arzobispo Mons. Gustavo Rodríguez Vega.
El encuentro Iglesia-Alacalde electo se dio en las oficinas del religioso en la SI Catedral. Es raro ver este tipo de encuentros, ya que el Arzobispo anterior, Emilio Carlos Berlié Belaunzarán, no aceptaba acercamientos con autoridades emanadas de Acción Nacional, sino sólo con priistas, sobre todo con su gran amiga Ivonne Ortega Pacheco.
Vila Dosal ofreció que el Ayuntamiento apoyará a la labor social contra la pobreza y a favor de la familia que forman parte de los compromisos y tarea de nuevo representante de la Iglesia en el Estado.
