Pidió que aceleraran su ejecución. Y este miércoles está
previsto que su deseo se haga realidad.
La muerte por inyección letal del hispano Daniel López está marcada para
las seis de la tarde hora local, 23:00 GMT en la prisión de Huntsville, Texas.
El joven de 27 años es considerado técnicamente un voluntario de la pena
de muerte, como se conoce a los condenados a los que un tribunal concede su
petición formal de renunciar a futuras apelaciones.
Esa concesión le fue otorgada a López por un tribunal federal.
Tras ser condenado a muerte en 2010, López solicitó en reiteradas
ocasiones que se acelere su proceso de ejecución, que en ocasiones se prolonga
durante décadas.
"No le veo el punto a esperar 20 años a que finalmente decidan
ejecutarme", señaló en una entrevista reciente.
Pero a pesar de la clara voluntad expresada por López sus abogados siguen
intentando salvarlo y argumentan que el joven tiene una historia de enfermedad
mental y varios intentos de suicidio.
Su equipo defensor llevará este mismo miércoles su lucha a la Corte
Suprema de Estados Unidos para que la ejecución sea postergada, según informes
en la prensa estadounidense.
Condenado por matar un policía
López fue condenado por la muerte en 2009 del policía Stuart Alexander, de
47 años, un agente con dos décadas de experiencia.
La muerte de Alexander ocurrió tras una persecución policial que comenzó
luego de que otro agente intentara detener a López cuando éste se saltó con su
vehículo una señal de parada en un barrio de la ciudad de Corpus Christi.
Tras una reyerta con el agente, López se dio a la fuga a alta velocidad y
llegó a un punto en la carretera en el que Stuart Alexander acababa de colocar
dispositivos para pinchar llantas con el fin de detenerlo.
López aseguró que intentó esquivar los dispositivos y atropelló al agente.
Según registros del caso, durante la fuga se comunicó con su madre, María
Teresa Quintero, a quién habría señalado "creo que atropellé a alguien, no
pude ver porque me habían lanzado gas pimienta".
López fue interceptado poco después, tras recibir disparos en el brazo,
cuello y espalda a su paso por otro control policial.
El joven dijo después que huyó cuando el primer policía intentó detenerlo
porque tenía drogas en su vehículo. La policía halló posteriormente en el auto
doce paquetes de cocaína.
Registros judiciales citados por varios medios de prensa señalan que López
estaba bajo libertad condicional luego de haber sido condenado por mantener
relaciones sexuales con menores.
"Está intentando suicidarse"
Los abogados de López cuestionaron la decision del tribunal federal que
encontró al joven mentalmente competente para renunciar a sus apelaciones.
También señalan que no debió haber sido condenado a muerte, porque no tuvo
intención de matar a Alexander.
Si la ejecución tiene lugar, Daniel López será el décimo preso ejecutado
este año en Texas y el número 19 en todo el país.
Pero su principal argumento es que López tiene una historia de
enfermedades mentales y varios intentos de suicidio y está usando su condena
para llevar a la realidad su largo deseo de acabar con su vida.
"Es claro que se ha permitido a López usar el sistema legal en otro
intento de quitarse la vida", dijo el abogado David Dow.
Los fiscales del caso, en cambio, afirman que López fue examinado por un
psicólogo y testificó ante un tribunal federal que no constató problemas
mentales.
De acuerdo a la ONG The Forgiveness Foundation o Fundación del Perdón, una
organización cristiana contraria a la pena de muerte, López abandonó su
educación con unos 15 años.
La fundación asegura en su sitio en internet que "a lo largo de su
infancia Daniel fue diagnosticado con el síndrome de déficit de atención".
Otro de los abogados defensores de López, Luis García, dijo que su cliente
estaba muy lejos de ser el monstruo descrito durante el juicio en su contra.
García dijo que López provenía "de un hogar quebrado y dos veces
intentó cometer suicidio cuando era adolescente, una vez intentando cortar sus
venas y otra con una sobredosis".
Si la ejecución tiene lugar, Daniel López será el décimo preso ejecutado
este año en Texas y el número 19 en todo el país.
El 50% de las ejecuciones de 2015 han tenido lugar en Texas.
El mismo estado también tiene previsto ejecutar el jueves a Tracy Beatty,
de 54 años, condenado por asesinar a su madre en 2003.
Al menos otros siete prisioneros en el corredor de la muerte en Texas
tienen fechas de ejecución en los próximos meses.

The young man said after he fled when police tried to stop him first because he had drugs in his vehicle. Police found the car later in packages of cocaine twelve o'clock.
Court records cited by several media said Lopez was on probation after being convicted of having sex with minors.
"He's trying to commit suicide"
Lopez's lawyers questioned the decision of the federal court found the young mentally competent to waive his appeals.
They also note that he should not have been sentenced to death, because he did not intend to kill Alexander.

If the execution takes place, Daniel Lopez will be the tenth prisoner executed this year in Texas and the 19th nationwide.
50% of the 2015 executions took place in Texas.
The state also plans to run on Thursday Tracy Beatty, 54, convicted of murdering his mother in 2003.
At least seven other prisoners on death row in Texas have execution dates in the coming months.
